Plan a SaaS MVP budget around scope, delivery milestones, running costs and production risks. Compare proposals without relying on invented market averages.

Start with a scope, not a universal price

A SaaS MVP development cost is only useful when you know what it buys. A single-user prototype, a paid multi-tenant product and a marketplace with seller payouts are different projects. This guide provides a budgeting worksheet rather than an unsupported industry average. Ask each supplier to quote the same user journeys, integrations and acceptance criteria.

Define the smallest paid workflow

Write one complete journey: a customer signs up, creates the thing they came for, receives the result and pays. List the administrator actions needed to support that journey. Separate essentials from conveniences: password recovery may be essential; a configurable analytics dashboard may wait. Each additional role, billing state and integration adds paths to implement and verify.

Break the quote into accountable work

Ask for discovery and architecture, product interface, authentication and authorization, domain workflows, billing, operations and release verification as separate work packages. Each should describe an observable outcome. “Stripe integration” is too vague; “a verified payment updates access, retries do not duplicate effects, and cancellation has a defined result” can be tested.

Use a transparent budget worksheet

Your initial budget is the sum of estimated engineering time multiplied by the agreed rate, design and content work, setup costs and a contingency tied to named uncertainties. For arithmetic only, 160 hours at an assumed $75/hour equals $12,000 before other costs. This is an illustrative calculation, not my quote, a market benchmark or a promise that 160 hours is sufficient. Replace both inputs with a reviewed scope.

Keep monthly operating costs separate

List hosting, database capacity, storage, transactional email, monitoring, payment fees and any AI usage. Model a normal month and a stress scenario using your expected active users and actions per user. Include human support and maintenance. Free tiers can support experiments but should not be the only basis for a paid product’s operating plan.

Identify the expensive uncertainties early

An undocumented third-party API, data migration, complex permissions or ambiguous payment ownership can dominate the estimate. Buy a small discovery milestone to test the riskiest assumption before funding the whole build. A working demonstration of the integration is more useful than a confident estimate based on a screenshot.

Compare proposals on what happens after the demo

Check whether the quote includes source ownership, account ownership, backups, deployment instructions, error states, monitoring and a handover. Ask how scope changes are approved and what happens if acceptance tests fail. A cheaper proposal can still be the right choice, but only after exclusions and ongoing responsibilities are visible.

Choose build, audit or remediation
