How to Hire a Stripe Connect Developer

Evaluate Stripe Connect developers with fund-flow questions, webhook failure cases, ownership checks and a concrete paid discovery milestone.

Hire for payment state, not a checkout screenshot

A Stripe Connect developer should be able to explain how your platform’s payments, connected accounts and application state fit together. A checkout demo is useful, but it does not show recovery from partial failure. Your interview should focus on the transactions your business actually needs and the operational consequences of getting them wrong.

Send the same brief to every candidate

Describe the buyer, seller, countries, order lifecycle, platform fee, refund rules and current stack. State whether production payments already exist. Ask each candidate to list assumptions and exclusions. Comparing proposals becomes easier when they answer the same question instead of imagining different products.

Ask them to explain the fund flow

Who creates the charge, when does the seller receive funds, and how does the platform earn its fee? Ask what changes when an order is cancelled or refunded. A good answer connects the business model to supported Stripe Connect options and flags unknowns for investigation. Memorized API names do not replace this reasoning.

Use a concrete failure scenario

Present this example: the provider accepted payment, your server timed out, and the webhook is delivered twice. Ask how the system avoids duplicate fulfillment and how support can determine the final state. Follow with an out-of-order event and a refund after a transfer. Request a state diagram or written sequence; do not ask for unauthorized production access.

Verify exact responsibilities

Ask for a case study describing the candidate’s role, stack, delivered workflows and constraints. A public product proves existence, not who wrote every subsystem. The Dryva case study records my full-stack work on booking, tracking and payments. Client revenue and transaction volume should only be discussed when there is evidence and permission.

Start with a paid discovery milestone

For an unclear integration, define a small deliverable: fund-flow design, account-state mapping, identified risks and an implementation estimate. For an existing system, include a safe review of webhook processing and reconciliation. Agree the artifacts and acceptance criteria in writing. This reduces uncertainty before committing to the full integration.

Check ownership and handover

Your business should control its provider accounts, source repository and deployment access. Require setup documentation, test instructions, operational alerts and a recovery process. Agree who handles incidents after launch and how changes are released. Support coverage and maintenance are scope items, not assumptions.

Compare the whole proposal

Read the marketplace cost guide to separate engineering from provider fees. My Stripe Connect integration service can cover a new build or focused remediation. Send the flow and known issues for a proposal that defines what will be implemented and how it will be verified.

Discuss your scope

Explore stripe connect integration, review the linked case study, or send a project brief. Include your product stage, constraints and target milestone so we can identify the right first step.
